First he tweeted, “All City Chess Club was in the studio last night…” which instantly raised questions. Then a few hours later he tweeted again telling us All-City Chess Club is Asher Roth, B.o.B, The Cool Kids, Charles Hamilton, Blu, Diggy, J. Cole, Wale and Lupe Fiasco. Whoa, some major and interesting names right there.

People are saying it’s for a remix to I’m Beaming, and I’ve even heard it’s for an entire project. Whatever the case, one thing is for certain: This is good for everyone. Let’s run through why this is going to be good for each involved.

Lupe Fiasco: Fiasco is unlike many rappers. It feels like he’s been around forever, yet only has two official albums. He’s recently spoken out about label troubles and his career in general. Although he has the mainstream talent and appeal it seems he doesn’t want any part of it. He even said he doesn’t want to be Jay-Z. He’s crafty, smart, and definitely cares about the product he puts out. However, due to this kind of thinking is why he was left off of something like MTV’s Hottest Emcees, which really ticked him off. Despite having a strong and large fan-base, he does seem to often get lost in the industry when people think of the best rappers. Getting a huge project like this started it just the punch in the face to the genre and its listeners he needs to do. Especially with the kind of talent and names he has assembled.

Asher Roth: Roth is a talented rapper who seems to have gotten lost in expectations of society. In a way, he kind of became the anti-Lupe. While Fiasco makes it extremely apparent he won’t step outside of his own comfort zone and into one of his label’s, Roth seemed to step inside to MTV’s zone, and abandon his. When Roth’s album dropped, it became something of a disappointment to most hip-hop heads. Roth definitely still lingered in the hip-hop realms but appeared destined for a one-hit wonder tag. Between this project and his latest mixtape, Roth can potentially climb his way back up the relevant ladder and remind hip-hop heads he’s still on his grind.

B.o.B: Bobby Ray appears to want to continue the buzz generating leading up to the release of his album on April 27. He’s not sitting around and having Nothin’ On You do all the buzzing for him, he constantly stays on the campaign trail. He dropped a mixtape to promote the album (even though now the title of it is irrelevant since the release date changed), and now has his name attached to this project, which will certainly have people constantly prying for more information on. Whether this comes out before or after the release of the album, it will still create a good push for him and his music.

Charles Hamilton: Hamilton needs all the help he can get to win people back over and make them care about what he does. Having his name attached to a project with a solid group of up-and-comers is his ticket back to relevance and resurgence of his career that he needs. It’s also good he’s attached to something with Wale, since it appeared for the longest time Wale was not a fan of Hamilton and would never work with him. Even though Wale did come out and say there was no beef, the fans were always questioning it. Working with him is the one way to finally show there’s no dispute. If fans see Wale overcoming whatever beef/hatred he had for him, then the fan might too.

The Cool Kids: I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a group’s buzz go so high, disappear, then go up again over and over like the Cool Kids. They are working on an album that appears like will never release. Their name is in-and-out of the talking-point circuits and never seem to be constantly talked about. This project is another oppurtunity to have people talking about the Cool Kids once again and go on to ponder about what the heck is going on with their debut album.

Wale: This project is the perfect way for Wale to avoid becoming just an afterthought. It’s now been sometime since his debut came out, so this is opportunity for him to remind people he had one of the best hip-hop albums of last year. His album was solid but didn’t quite crack into the mainstream as much as he probably hoped. This project is a nice platform to further push the Wale campaign and really get people excited about his next release (whenever that will be).

Diggy: The internet went nuts when his Made Ya Look freestyle video dropped, and just a matter of days after that, he was signed. He’s had more material leak since but this is his first major collaboration and chance to prove that the 15-year-old really can flow with the big boys.

J. Cole: A lot of people point to him being the next big lyrical all-star. Since the Warm-Up, his buzz and stock has been slowly growing and 2010 marks the year for the big push toward the release of his album. He started it off with the XXL Freshman 10 cover, and this project is the perfect next step. He’s aligned with more up-and-comers and already established names to associate himself with on this. If he can continue his lyrical madness, he can come out of this a real winner and get people even more excited for his debut.

Blu: He’s easily one of the best lyrical rappers around but can never seem to break through the strong niche following he already has and make more people appreciate and acknowledge his work. Being involved with this project is a major shot into popular mainstream hip-hop for him. Most of us know he can spit, but this time he’ll be doing so alongside some big names.

Whenever multiple rappers are on a song or a project, the discussion of who had the better verse or song is always going to happen. People like to discuss whom renegaded whom on a song. So this project is a definite chance for the up-and-comers involved to really get their name out and prove they are worthy of your attention.

All-City Chess Club is for sure an odd name but extremely fitting. Not only are all these guys involved pretty smart, but this project serves as quite the strategic game for them to all push themselves and their own music. It’s a win for all of them, but most importantly for us, the fan, because we get to listen when it’s done.

Asher Roth’s debut album Asleep in the Bread Aisle is coming up on its one-year anniversary of release. Roth’s hype was enormous leading up to the release. His mixtape, The Greenhouse Effect Vol. 1, was beloved by many, he was on XXL’s Freshman 10 list for 2009, and his song I Love College was everywhere. Finally the day came for his anticipated album, and just like that, the buzz died.

Not only was his album a disappointment to many, it should be an embarrassment to Roth. He may have even set a precedent for the fastest killing of a buzz.

A major factor that could have actually been a predictor to a doomed album from the beginning was the fact that MTV seemed to latch onto Roth and just wouldn’t let him go. Once MTV got a hold of him it was almost like Roth just decided to start catering to them. He became a frat-boy rapper. Just like that, the quick-witted Roth was a watered-down MTV artist.

Now almost a year later, Roth is releasing his new mixtape, Seared Foie Gras with Quince and Cranberry. That title alone shows signs that Roth is aiming to shake off the frat-boy following as that title is sure to go over many people’s heads.

His selection of beats for the tape are rather nice. He decides to flow over beats produced by the likes of J. Dilla, Kanye West, Pharrell, RZA, and Ryan Leslie. Do his verses and punchlines live up to the beats he used? And more importantly does his flow? The simple answer is a mere no. Roth gets by on almost every beat by being average. There are a few standouts, but as a whole, the tape falls flat.

Roth does have his comical moments on the mixtape. However, his entire shtick is getting old and has really become something like a one-hit wonder YouTube sensation. His style, persona, flow, and lyrics are easy to emulate. Just look at Spose and his ever-growing in popularity, I’m Awesome. Sure the song is funny at some parts when you first listen to it, but it’s not a good song by any means. It has little-to-no replay value and adds nothing to hip-hop as a genre. It’s kind of like a funny movie. Just because a movie makes you laugh doesn’t mean it’s good. Just look at the upcoming Hot Tub Time Machine. That movie looks ridiculously stupid, but I’m sure if I go see it, I’ll laugh.

It’s becoming more evident, especially after this release, that Roth may be doomed to just be a flash-in-the-pan, who once showed tremendous potential. It’s quite sad really because Roth could be good it seems if he just found his own way and not try to make people like him with mindless rhymes and song topics.

The only way for Roth to win back some love from the hip-hop heads is for his sophomore to be less poppy and for him to not be so mindless. Can he do it? I really hope so.

This is a very exciting Mixtape Monday. B.o.B’s buzz continues to grow and he makes the right move in releasing a new mixtape today, “May 25th.” It’s also a good marketing move to name the mixtape as the date his debut album is slated to drop.

Also appearing on his mixtape are Charles Hamilton, Asher Roth, and J. Cole. B.o.B, along with his featured friends, all bring the heat on this mixtape to accomplish the exact point this mixtape is supposed to make: to get people excited.

So do yourself a favor, download this mixtape so you got something a little more fresh to tide you over until May 25th.

Listen to “Fool For Love” featuring Charles Hamilton and download the tape.

To further build upon the excitement of new B.o.B music, we’d like to bring attention to a mixtape from back in September that we recently just got a hold off. Azage’s “Bars Outbreak” is also worthy of your time and download.

Hamilton revealed his next mixtape is “Binge Vol. 3 (Charles Hamilton’s Last Mixtape).” Along with that, he has “The L Word 2″ ready to go as well.

Slowly, but surely, Hamilton is making himself known again and trying to win everybody back over. It appears he may have faced his demons and is ready to become relevant again. He has all the talents to be a successful rapper and potential game changer. It’s just a matter of staying out of trouble.

You see, despite being featured as XXL’s 2009 Freshman, lots are still weary about the troubled 22-year-old rapper.

The hip-hop community has been heavily watching Hamilton for some time now. He saw more attention come his way after making a beat of just Windows XP sounds while dropping awesome lyrical internet references over it. He continued to make mixtape after mixtape. He was widely talked about. Whether it was his music or his obsession with Sonic, Hamilton’s name was popping up everywhere in the hip-hop underground. Everything looked promising for the young up-and-comer.

The beginning of 2009 really seemed to set up Hamilton’s most promising year yet. He was featured alongside the likes of Wale, Kid Cudi, Asher Roth and B.o.B in XXL. 2009 looked to be his official coming-out party. Along with that, his mixtape, “Well Isn’t This Awkward,” caught a lot of attention. But, that all quickly fell apart after poor decision making by Hamilton.

He was very active across the internet. He was very open about everything on his now-deceased blog, along with posting a lot on Twitter. The internet gave us a better look into the world of Hamilton but what we mostly saw was not good.

As 2009 slowly moved along, trouble came pouring in for Hamilton. In April, blogs everywhere were buzzing about Hamilton stealing a beat from Black Spade. As the story goes, Hamilton performed a song, “Shinin,” at SXSW when Black Spade was in the audience. Black Spade recognized the beat to it as his own. He approached Hamilton afterward to tell him he made the beat but liked what Hamilton did with it. Hamilton ended up telling him that’s not possible since he himself made the beat. That’s when things went haywire. Black Spade put out a video explaining the situation. Then, Hamilton uploaded his ProTools session for “Shinin.” However, with that upload came the blatant evidence that it was in fact Black Spade’s beat.

After the beat incident, things didn’t get better for Hamilton. A video surfaced of him getting punched by a female. It started off with Hamilton simply freestyling to an already angry woman and ended with a punch.

The mother-of-all problems for Hamilton came when the artwork and production credits for his much-anticipated free album, “This Perfect Life” were released. On the back cover, James Yancey, better known as J. Dilla, was listed as executive producer. J. Dilla is a legendary producer out of Detroit. However, the problem here is Dilla passed away back in 2006. There’s no way he could have produced Hamilton’s album. This erupted a firestorm in the hip-hop community and especially in Detroit. Most saw it as disrespectful and just a way for Hamilton to bring more attention to himself. Shots were being fired, figuratively of course, through Twitter. Houseshoes took to the internet to make more people aware of the atrocity Hamilton committed. Hamilton even went as far as saying he listed his name because he had spiritual encounters with Dilla during the recording sessions and by listing his name it will allow Dilla’s family to make some money. The problems with his explanation are first, saying you have spiritual encounters just screams “I’m crazy,” and second, Hamilton’s album was being released for free so it’s impossible for anyone to make money off it.

The supposed release date for the album came and went without any album being released. Hamilton effectively disappeared from the internet all together after the controversy. As time went on we learned Hamilton was dropped by his label, Interscope. We never got a real explanation to why it happened as Hamilton was still missing from the online world. The once homeless teenager now appeared homeless again. But, quietly, Hamilton arose from the shadows. A graphic with Hamilton in front of a billboard with graffiti reading: “Charles Hamilton is back” appeared online. After that, a couple leaks of new material came out and then a full mixtape, “Normalcy,” dropped. The mixtape was a success as it was probably Hamilton’s most mature project to date.

As this Pac-Man Jones (talented, but extremely troubled) of hip hop slowly reemerges to the scene, he approaches what could possibly be his final chance. The kid with a bad drug history and known for being kicked out of schools is now on a short string with basically everyone. He does deserve success and credibility as one of hip hop’s finest. Keep in mind, he still has a Kanye West and Pharrell cosign under his belt. Hamilton is lyrically gifted and has a knack for creating some monster beats. He is very sample-driven but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It adds more emotion to his creations to fit his very emotional persona.

As avid hip-hop listeners, we must see 2010 as new slate, but at the same, a final chance for Hamilton.

To put it simply, Chris Webby is everything Asher Roth should be.

This white boy rapper repping the east coast (Connecticut), quickly caught my attention when I noticed the title of his latest mixtape, ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Rapper.’ I was a huge Turtle fan as a kid, so I couldn’t help but download the tape. A few songs in and I was sold.

Like Roth, Webby is a white kid from the suburbs and enjoys rap and weed. After Roth’s Greenhouse Effect mixtape I was pumped for his debut album, only to be disappointed when it finally came out. I included Roth in The Urbanian’s 5 Hip-Hop Artists to Look for in 2009, and now I regret that. There’s a plethora of rappers I want to insert into that spot, and Webby would be one of them.

Below is my favorite track, ‘Come Fly Away,’ followed by a download link. Also, be sure to check out Chris Webby on Myspace.

In my experience, sometimes the smartest kids are the ones who don’t show off in class. They might just sit in the back of the room, possibly catching up on sleep because the lessons come easy to them. They’re natural geniuses. This is where Mickey Factz and B.o.B. classify.
Since the XXL Freshman issue came out, and the 10 rappers gained incredible fame, these two have the least amount of details as to when their debut albums will actually come out. Smart move. It can be argued that the year of 2009 belongs to Cudi and Drake. Both have hits under their names, and both are heavily anticipated. Drake has the mainstream, while Cudi have more of the indie scene. No offense to Wale, but ‘Chillin’ is nowhere on the same radar as ‘Day n’ Nite’ or ‘Best I Ever Had.’
Ace Hood is of course, Ace Hood, and Curren$y and Cory Gunz are still waiting on someone to offer them a decent deal. Asher had a decent release and gained a lot of fans with his constant touring, Blu is gaining even more underground credibility, and Charles Hamilton is nowhere to be found. So what have Mickey Factz and B.o.B. been doing?
Mickey Factz has been touring all over the place, making great connections with a lot of great artists. Slaughterhouse, KRS-One, and Lupe Fiasco to name a few. He’s been tearing up the Rock The Bells tour and even going to Japan. He’s building the brand, making sure that when he finally comes out with the album, he has enough core fans to guarantee a good release, and even putting out a song or two once and awhile.
B.o.B. has been the most quiet, staying behind the scenes perfecting his sound. After putting out his mixtape, “B.o.B. vs. Bobby Ray”, people are as excited as ever to finally hear his new album. He’s also been doing a lot of low key features with new artists like Willy Northpole, and artist of other genres such as Cobra Starship. Making special appearances on Asher and Cudi’s “The Great Hangover Tour,” also helps. His work with Reebok and the video for ‘Put On’ are also giving him even more momentum, with the video playing all over video stations like MTVU and MTV Jams.
Mickey Factz is becoming the savior of New York hip hop, and B.o.B. is becoming Outkast’s new prophet. Both plan to have their projects out sometime in 2010, most likely after everyone else’s buzz has cooled off. With methods that seemingly won’t fail, these two are sure to bring us two of the best albums to start off the new decade. Not to mention The Urbanian’s favorites, Mike Posner and Big Sean should be releasing projects around the same time, so we should be headed into a storm of really, really good music.

This year has sparked a lot of excitement in Hip Hop fans. We’ve seen a lot of new artists emerge and heard many phrases such as, “Hip Hop is back”. From groups like Slaughterhouse bringing crazy lyricism and hardcore rap back, to Cam’ron and now even Ma$e coming out of retirement, and musical sensations like Drake, Cudi, and the rest of the 2009 Freshmen, this year has shown nothing but good potential for the coming years in music.

I was never a soldier for the Hip Hop is Dead Army, but even I’ll admit, Hip Hop needed to get off the couch and get back to business. Although people want to assign blame to some southern artist like Soulja Boy or Dem Franchise Boyz (where have they been anyway?), no one really knows when things got so out of hand, and well, lazy. I believe I’ve found the answer to this, and also have figured out why Drake, Cudi, Wale, Mickey Factz, Big Sean, and many others are so refreshing to the public’s ears.

Some people don’t realize that conscious rap and gangsta rap used to be one in the same. While Public Enemy and N.W.A. had different techniques, their goals were ultimately the same: to address a problem in America today and make sure it didn’t just get swept under the rug. Even then, there still were fun records. Digital Underground with The Humpty Dance, songs like “Doin’ The Butt” and “The Pee-Wee Herman“, and who can forget the timeless classic, “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot.

Back then, Hip Hop had a balance, it had music for every part of the day. When you’re watching a movie, the soundtrack has all types of songs on it to better suit the moment. That’s how hip hop was, but somehow we lost that. Things became divided, some fans got lazy and didn’t challenge themselves musically, some went for more of an elitist route and became snobs and high and mighty and cut off all ties with anything mainstream. Things became separated when Hip Hop was about unity.

Things have finally changed, and in my most humble opinion, is thanks to Kanye West. He was one of the first new artists in a long time to play both sides, and do them really well. He knows how to make radio friendly music and still stay true to the art form. Which is why today, Wale can do a party song with Lady GaGa but still make a concept mixtape like “Mixtape About Nothing”, why Asher Roth can make songs like “I Love College” and still make very emotional records such as “His Dream.”

Regular, everyday, human beings aren’t so one dimensional. They have intellectual conversations with friends in the afternoon, and go to the club with them in the evening. They have a little cream with their coffee from time to time. Kanye West, along with Common, Lupe Fiasco, Jay-Z, Outkast and others, revamped what it meant to be a conscious rapper. They unified things again. They made albums full of fun, emotion, intellect, and sometimes humor. Hip Hop is finally getting off the couch, and it looks like its going to be a good year.

Asher Roth still hasn’t released a freestyle as good as ‘A Milli’ but this one is rather close. The best part is when he clowns on Spencer Pratt.
For those that don’t know, Pratt, has repeatedly bashed Roth, and claims to be a way better rapper.

A line wrapping around an entire block engulfs Royal Oak, Mich. as anticipation builds to experience a great hangover. But, this is a hangover that you want to have.

Asher Roth, Kid Cudi, B.o.B, and 88 Keys have teamed up this summer to perform across the country in the Great Hangover Tour, and The Urbanian was there July 18 in Royal Oak to take it all in.

When doors finally opened, the young crowd began to rapidly file in to get as close to the stage as possible. In the Royal Oak Music Theatre, there’s basically four different elevated levels for people to stand. The Urbanian set up shop on the second platform in the front row middle, which provided an excellent sight line over the mass of people right by the stage, while still being close.

First to take the stage was 88 Keys. You could instantly tell not many of the people attending the concert knew who he was. I tried starting an ‘88′ chant, but it was highly unsuccessful, which ended with some girl asking me why I was chanting ‘88.’

88 Keys came running out on stage with a backpack like he was dressed for an afternoon hike up a mountain. He went right into his first single off ‘The Death of Adam,’ ‘Stay Up (Viagra).’ Even though not many people knew his music the audience responded well to him. He managed to still get everyone saying ‘Stay up.’

Once 88 Keys was finished, I figured there would be a little downtime in between sets, but B.o.B came running right out, starting off with ‘Haterz Everywhere.’ It seemed more people knew B.o.B’s music, but there was still many left in the dark.

B.o.B had a couple back-up singers to go along with his set, which was a nice touch. B.o.B might be the most talented out of all four of the emcees there, and if more of the audience knew him, this would have really stood out more.

At one point he even busted out an acoustic guitar for a song. However, the highlight during his set was definitely his closing song, ‘I’ll Be in the Sky,’ which the majority of the audience seemed to know and sang along to. My guess is that people saw B.o.B’s name on the concert bill and googled him, yielding results with that song since it’s his most commercialized song. Hopefully people left this concert as new fans of B.o.B.

After he was done, there was quite some time in between him and Kid Cudi’s set. Finally the place got darker and lights from the stage starting flashing and a beat dropped, that is supposedly Kid Cudi’s ‘theme music’ which will appear on all his albums, soon followed by a shadowy figure appeared on stage. More lights flashed on revealing Cudi and the beat to ‘Down ‘n’ Out’ dropped and instantly the crowd got extra hyped and started singing along with Cudi. Once this set started, a certain strong aroma was thick amongst the air in the theater.

Kid Cudi performed for quite awhile, including what seemed like a 10-minute ‘Day ‘n’ Nite’ techno-fury of a dance party where everyone was jumping up and down, grinding, yelling, and singing. It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever been apart of. It was just a straight up good time.

Kid Cudi’s set stood out for the usage of lights during his songs. Behind him was a screen that flashed lights and images corresponding to what song he was performing. During ‘Man on the Moon,’ there were images of the moon and outer space along with an astronaut cartoon of Cudi. In ‘Sky Might Fall’ there were fireworks going off.

A song that really stood out was ‘Mr. Solo Dolo,’ where two extra huge beams of light were brought out and set on stage as all the other lights were turned off. These lights traded off flashing as Cudi sang this chillingly and eerie-sounding song. These lights helped make the experience of seeing this song live more haunting.

Cudi proved that he should be rocking arenas, rather than tiny theaters.

When Cudi was finished I felt like there was no way Asher Roth could come close to topping him. Well, he didn’t, but he held his own.

Like Cudi’s set standing out for the lighting, Roth’s stood out for the energy he brought to the stage. His set was so loud I couldn’t hear a thing after the show. That certain strong aroma reappeared when Roth came out, this time coming back with even more potency.

Roth went right into with ‘Lark On My Go-Kart.’ Everyone rapped right along with him, along with the jumping and dancing.

Roth brought out some All-American Rejects lead singer look-alike to help hype the crowd up even further. This guy did random things, such as sporting a lions costume during ‘Lion’s Roar,’ and tossing out water bottles to people in the crowd.

Like I said, Roth’s set was full of energy and wildly entertaining. During ‘She Don’t Wanna Man,’ he brought some ladies out on stage to strut their stuff. Roth brought so much energy out during this song that even the guys in the crowd were getting into this song.

Overall, this was the best concert I’ve been to this summer, (yes it even beats out Rock the Bells, which I was third row for), and possibly the best I’ve ever been to (and I’ve been to a lot of concerts). My only disappointment was that 88 Keys didn’t play ‘Morningwood,’ which I felt was the best song of 2008.

It should also be noted that what helped make this concert even more enjoyable was the fact that everyone was real friendly and chill during it (at least those by me). Usually at concerts like this with general admission you get people pushing and shoving, throwing some elbows and being quite rude. However, that was not the case here. Everyone really wanted to have good time, so everyone was friendly to each other, and dancing with each other. In fact, at one point when Cudi threw his shoes out into the crowd, I made a dive onto the floor for it, (coming nowhere close) and my Burn Rubber hat came flying off and I couldn’t find it. Thinking that there’s no way I would get it back and someone would certainly snatch it right up for themselves, a few guys got their cellphones out to shine light for me to find it, and sure enough I got it right back.

If The Great Hangover Tour comes rolling through close to you, in fact, even if it’s hours away, it’s worth the drive to go to. Get out there and enjoy this concert.

Enjoy some video I managed to get while security wasn’t looking.
