John Mayer Said Something!
Just after one controversial interview with Rolling Stone magazine, John Mayer ups the ante with his recent Playboy interview.
Twitter was a-blazing this morning as everyone began tweeting about Mayer as he rose into the trending topics where his controversial remarks battled teen girls and their tweets about how Justin Bieber and the Jonas Brothers are hot.
In the interview, Mayer had lots to say about his exes Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston. He said Simpson was like “sexual napalm” and Aniston wished things were back to what they were like in the 1990s. However, most people are talking about Mayer’s racially-charged aspects of the interview.
Mayer not only referred to his dick as a white supremacist, but also said the “n” word at one point when referring to “hood passes.” Now, the dick problem is much more minuscule than the “n” word one. If it was a stand-up comedian saying that, people would probably laugh rather than lash out at Mayer. It does seem like something comedian Daniel Tosh came up with.
As for the “n” word, Mayer wasn’t implicating it negatively towards black people. However, that word should never, ever, come out of a white person’s mouth, regardless of “passes.”
A few hours ago Mayer finally came out and apologized via Twitter. He said he didn’t know why he thought he could get away with using a word that is so emotionally charged. He also promised to never use it again. He then went on to say he doesn’t have the stomach to be a shock jock and is going to stop being so raw in interviews.
It’s good to hear Mayer will stray away from racial terms, but it’s sad to hear he’s going to tone it down in interviews. Most interviews today are bland and very generic. They seem to just go through the motions and since famous people are often doing tons of interviews, they end up saying the same thing over and over again. Mayer’s last two interviews have been fresh, shocking, and hilarious. Not since Bob Dylan really has anyone really been this captivating to the point where they’re really just messing with the interviewer.
Mayer should continue saying what he wants, and he should be raw. He may in fact only said he’s going to tone it down to please his audience, since it is mostly women. It’s a fair assumption women don’t want to her Mayer talk about how if Simpson charged him money to sleep with her he would sell all his “shit” to continue “fucking her.” However, his straight male fans probably caught a case of the fist pumping as they read that interview. Let’s also not forget what magazine that interview appears in.
And why has Mayer been so shocking and weird as of late? Perhaps it’s because he’s older and established with no need to impress anyone anymore. Or perhaps it’s just because he’s sick of this goodie two-shoes high school boy image. Or perhaps he really is emotionally messed up from his break-up with Aniston still.
Whatever the case, he just needs to continue being himself. If he’d rather masturbate then have sex and he’s comfortable with telling the world that, then let the man speak his mind. That is what interviews are for after all.
