Young Money: The Corniest Thing in Hip Hop

young money squareRadio stations everywhere are spinning Young Money’s Bedrock. These musical geniuses who make up this group have found success by taking a horribly corny pick-up line and singing about it. It only makes sense they make a song like that, since the group itself is horribly corny.

Even though he stepped down as president of Young Money, the label is mostly known for their association with Lil’ Wayne. It was in 2007  when Weezy decided to leave the title of president to Cortez Bryant. Since then, the reigns were handed over to Mack Maine.

Mack Maine is an average rapper who only receives attention due to his longtime friendship with and riding the coattails of Wayne. He even tries to emulate the persona of Wayne by talking about how he is constantly recording and never writes his songs down. Last year in an interview with XXL, he told them he’s not a rapper – but a prophet. That screams corny, especially when you only possess a dime-a-dozen type of talent.

Another rising-in-popularity rapper on the label is Nicki Minaj. Often referred to as one of the premiere female rappers around, Minaj actually doesn’t do much to impress. She does have a surprisingly impressive flow, but there’s not much to like after that. Her writing and punchlines often come up short to living up to the hype surrounding her name. Most of the time it appears she rhymes words just because they rhyme due to the nonsensical things that come up in her songs. She really only attracts attention due to her obscenity, which is rare to come from a female in a male-dominated genre. There’s a good chance more people Google “Nicki Minaj booty” than “Nicki Minaj lyrics.” Her “Barbie” routine is getting old and it’s only a matter of time until she disappears into Da Brat territory and is on some lame VH1 reality television show.

Further backing up the corniness of this label, we can look to the their December-released collaborative album, We Are Young Money. It’s mind-blowing anyone even bought this album since it touts one of the most-ridiculous album covers of all time. It looks like a photoshopped piece of junk, or something someone put together through Microsoft Paint.

Hidden beneath the staggering amount of corniness is some actual talent. Of course Lil Wayne always flashes signs of brilliance (mostly on mixtapes) and shows why so many people love him. He is always making music, so for every good song he drops, he has two to three horrible songs overshadowing his good material.

Then, there’s Drake. You’ve got to give it to him for being loyalty to Wayne and signing with this horrendous label. Young Money is extremely lucky to have landed the most-wanted artist this past year. He’s the star and the reason why there’s so much attention towards Young Money.

As Weezy prepares for his prison sentence, it’s a wonder how the rest of Young Money will fair without him. Obviously, Drake is going to be alright, but the rest simply don’t have the talent to make it on their own. Lil Wayne is busying recording as much material as possible to last his sentence and keep his name relevant while he’s gone. This also includes material for Tha Carter IV, and hopefully for Young Money’s sake, material for them as well. Young Money doesn’t have enough talent to make it and get attention without a feature from Wayne. If he’s not leaving them material, it could be bad news for the rest of the label.

Props to this – Young Money along with most, if not all of radio rap is garbage and talentless and all in all dumbed down. To appeal to our dumbed down nation. There are many good artists out there, It’s sad that trends and copy cats shadow those who really are worth it. Business is business when it comes to making cash i guess, but there are still passionate people out there doing it legit.

Hahahahah I’m going to laugh when Young Money sues you for this article! I agree though… Young Money is stupid. I’ve always liked Lil Wayne though…and although his music is getting much cheesier from when he was a Hot Boy….I can’t help but love him. The rest of them are ridiculous, however….and Drake needs to go back on Digrassi and stop bragging about how rich and awesome he is in his songs. He originated on a young adult soap opera. He’s not a street thug. …and that’s all I have to say about that.
