Mike Posner’s sophomore mixtape, ‘One Foot Out The Door,’ originally scheduled to be released Oct. 29, came out a couple days early, and is now available on iTunesU.
Posner continues to show the world his innovative pop stylings with this mixtape and possibly even ups the ante on a couple of the songs off this one. You can also tell that his singing has immensely improved as well compared to his first release, ‘A Matter of Time.’ This is most noticeable on his cover of John Mayer’s ‘I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You).’
Another improvement from the first release to this one, is no more Don Cannon, and the addition of Clinton Sparks. Cannon is just annoying. It was nice to have a big name like that associated with a first release, but getting Sparks for this one is way better. The “Get familiar” tag over songs is better than “the cannon, the cannon” tag.
This mixtape also features one of the best songs of 2009, ‘Speed of Sound.’ This is by far Posner’s best song yet, and it’s the best preview of what his future will be like in music. This song proves that Posner is everything Justin Timberlake would want to be. Posner is not just pop, he’s innovative and brings something new to not only the pop genre, but to music as a whole. It’s scary to think he’s just a senior at Duke right now. Just wait until he’s able to concentrate fully on making music.
Is ‘One Foot Out The Door’ better than ‘A Matter of Time?’ Probably not. I’ll explain my reasoning with cross country scoring rules. Most of you probably won’t understand that, but Posner did run cross country in high school, so it’d only make sense to do it that way. Even though ‘One Foot Out The Door’ offers up a couple songs that are Posner’s best yet (‘You Don’t Have To Leave,’ and ‘Speed of Sound’), the depth of ‘A Matter of Time,’ might be too much for this new release.’ So the tracklisting of ‘One Foot Out The Door’ might get a couple of tracks ahead of ‘A Matter of Time,’ but ‘Time’ is getting a ton of tracks in ahead of ‘Door’s’ third best track.
Posner continues his streak of creativity and innovation with the release, and only further adds to the excitement of not only his debut album in 2010, but his entire music career.
