In a world where everyone is a rapper, lots of talent gets diluted. We’re in a place where ringtone rappers rule. While you’re busy riding Lil’ Wayne’s spaceship, there’s plenty of fresh and creative rappers out there that are worth your attention. Here’s five you should get to know immediately.
Cadence Weapon brings a plethora of unconventional beats to rhyme over to the hip-hop genre. In way he converges house music and video game-like beats where he lights up with his own personal flare. Cadence Weapon has all the talent where if he conformed could easily become a big name.
“In Search of the Youth Crew”
B. Dolan is one of the better lyrical songwriters available to listen to. In fact, he may be less of a rapper, and more of a poet. He can be lyrically controversial, since you can easily put the term ‘activist’ on his resume. He manages to address things such as politics and religion in his songs. He’s a part of the Strange Famous crew and is often found alongside Sage Francis. He performed at some Rock the Bells dates this year, which is great to see.
“Joan of Arcadia”
Cecil Otter is a personal favorite of mine, and is who I consider to be one of the best lyricists in all of hip-hop. “While you played the role of Jesus, I was spilling your wine.” He’s a part of the Doomtree collective, and like B. Dolan, also a part of the Strange Famous crew. Kid Cudi likes to do the man on the moon ordeal, and Otter brings us the lone wolf mentality.
“Rebel Yellow”
Donnis is the most recent artist to get a 10 Deep sponsorship on a mixtape, which is a pretty good deal. With that, it may be more of a stretch thinking you’ve never heard of him. But when the mixtape dropped I heard little buzz about it by the hip-hop heads. Donnis brings some feel-good music to the messy table that is hip hop. He’s a part of this lower 20s movement in hip hop that’s here to rescue us from the jokers.
“I Am Me”
Novel is perhaps the better known artist out of anyone in this group, but I feel that his talent exceeds almost everyone in music period. Lots of people are into artists like Kid Cudi, Drake, and B.o.B since they trade off singing and rapping. Sure they do it respectively, but Novel destroys them in the singing category. Novel perfectly trades off his ability to sing soulfully along with rapping. Why isn’t Novel in everyone’s mp3 players? This is a case for the X-Files. Novel also is the artist behind what I think the song of the year (so far) is, ”E.O.T.W (aka Donnie Darko).”
“E.O.T.W (aka Donnie Darko)”
Why isn’t James Wade mentioned! websites have been buzzin about dude lately!!! lyrics are crazy, can rap about anything!!!
Well since we ran an exclusive with him I was hoping people that visit this site have already been rocking out to Wade.
the Redland is also a great hip hop duo that is putting in mad work in the industry.
