One of the all-time greatest musicians, Bob Dylan had a little run in with the law back on the evening of July 23 in a New Jersey Shore community, the Associated Press is reporting. Someone noticed Dylan lurking around a neighborhood like some shadowy mysterious figure straight out a Charles Dicken’s novel and called in the police.
I can’t help but laugh at how funny in so many different ways this entire scenario is.
First off, Dylan got the police called on him while walking around looking at houses before his show. Looking at houses? That’s a new one. While most other musicians see how many substances they can get into their body before hitting the stage, the 68-year-old Dylan is doing, well, doing what other 68-year-old people do, just going for an evening stroll.
Now, another thing I want to know, is why did this person call the cops on Dylan? I see two reasons why this could be. One, they thought Dylan was somebody’s poor old grandpa who has wandered off and now is lost. They thought they better call the police before something bad happens to this old and confused man. Or, they thought Dylan was a creepy old guy carrying around candy in his pockets looking for some Toddlers & Tiaras-esque children to lure his way.
So now a 24-year-old police officer arrives on the scene and approaches Dylan. If I was this officer, and I’m sure the same could be said for most other people, I would have recognized Dylan right away, forget about my job, and annoy the hell out of Dylan by telling him how awesome he is. But, this officer did not recognize him and proceeded to ask for Dylan’s name. One would assume right when Dylan said, “I’m Bob Dylan,” this whole thing would be over and the officer would have recognized the name, and would now have a cool story to tell his friends. But no, that’s not what happened, the officer went on to ask what he was doing here, and Dylan told him he was here on tour. So now you think the officer would have been aware of things going on in the area, such as major concerts, and would have realized who Dylan really is now, and just wasn’t familiar with him because his I-Pod is jammed full of Lil’ Wayne and no songs that written longer than 5 years ago. Again, no. The officer wasn’t able to successfully use his brain to figure out this entire mess, and even a second officer arrived on scene, who also did not know who Dylan was.
Okay, seriously. I can understand not being able to recognize him, but not evening recognizing the name? Anyone who listens to music of any kind of genre should be able to recognize the name: Bob Dylan. Maybe it’s true and Bon Jovi really is the only music people listen to in New Jersey.
Since Dylan didn’t have any ID on him (and he should never have to carry around any), the officers accompanied him back to his hotel where the tour management had to “vouch” for him.
Now that this story is out there I hope that both these officers feel like complete idiots.
Dylan once said: “Being noticed can be a burden. Jesus got himself crucified because he got himself noticed. So I disappear a lot.”
Dylan sure did disappear, but he got noticed. Just not noticed in the way he usually is.
One side note that I must address, how awesome do you think Dylan felt that someone wasn’t able to recognize him?
It must have been a dream come true for him haha
Hahahahah WHAT THE HELL!!?? I would recognize young Dylan, but probably not 68 year old Dylan..so I can understand that…especially given the fact that he was walking around a neighborhood- that’s the last place I’d picture myself meeting someone of Bob Dylan’s caliber. However, once he said “Yeah, I’m Bob Dylan.” I’d be able to piece it all together and get an autograph or let him go for a free ticket to his concert! hahaha. What idiots.
