Facebook Taking From Twitter, Again.

A couple weeks ago, Facebook gave users the ability to assign their profile a public profile account name. By this, we mean Facebook gave users the ability to do something that MySpace, Twitter, and LiveJournal users have been able to do since the onset of each respective network. For example, upon completion of creation of a MySpace profile you’re asked to assign your profile a public name i.e. myspace.com/yournamehere, or with Twitter your profile name is made during the registration process i.e. twitter.com/yournamehere. However, as of June 13th the gold rush for Facebook profile names began. That said, Facebook followed suit with the format making it’s URL facebook.com/saiduser.

What’s this all mean? Well, long story short, Facebook is trialing allowing users to publish their feeds / “streams” publicly just as Twitter does. So if users chose to do so, they’d be able to set certain aspects of their profile to public, so people who aren’t their friends could access a basic version of their updates via their public Facebook URL. Is this is ever going to be official? Hard to tell, however given the recent trend with Facebook sculpting itself to be more like Twitter, I wouldn’t bet against it.
