Throughout the three and a half long hours, full of unnecessary montages and unnecessary introductions, there were a few highlights during the Oscars, and they all came during the winner’s speeches.
The beautiful Penelope Cruz won the first award of the evening, and gave an emotional speech on the verge of tears. She said that as a kid she would watch the awards and be
lieved it to be a cermony of unity, because art is the universal language.
Perhaps the most emotional speech of the night came from Dustin Lance Black, who wrote the screenplay for Milk. He said that Harvey Milk was a life changing person for him, thanked his mom for accepting his lifestyle, and promised gay and lesbian kids that they will have equal rights federally, across the nation some day.
However, the great emotion by several of winners, couldn’t hide the fact that the Oscars seemed to be trying too hard for entertainment. This year the award show tried to become a television show, by steering towards song and dance numbers lead by Hugh Jackman. Jackman opened up the program with a song and dance number, and I was thinking, well that was different, and kind of cool. But by the time the next one came up, I just wanted them to get on with the awards.
The Oscars also presented montages of films released in 2008 with catergories such as romance, comedy and action. Again, the montages were kind of interesting, but I just wanted them to present the awards and hear the winner’s speeches.
Possibly the most awkward moments of the night came when previous winners of the acting categories came on stage to talk about this year’s nominees. Some of the nominees while sitting in the audience had looks on their faces that read, “is this seriously happening?”
Slumdog Millionaire ended up being the big winner of the evening, taking home eight awards, including Best Picture. Everyone involved in that film that won an award gave great speeches and were highly appreciative.
At the end of it all, I was thankful it was finally over. The Oscars think the presentation of the awards has to be this huge entertaining ordeal. It’s good to have some fun during the show, but it’s just too long. I honestly think more people would watch if they just stuck to the basics by handing out the awards, letting the winners give their acceptance speech, and have some comedian host the show and throw in some jokes here and there between the awards.
